Garmin STRIKER Cast – Castable Sonar Fish Finder Review

Garmin Strike Featured Image

The STRIKER Cast is one of the most advanced portable fish finders we’ve ever tested if you can even call it a fish finder.

Garmin chose against selling you a screen with a touchpad since they are leaders in their industry. Your phone serves as the fish finder on this gadget, and the STRIKER Cast serves as the inexpensive transducer/GPS plotter.

This device is not for you if you’re seeking a fish finder with plenty of features. However, if you’re searching for something that is incredibly cheap and compact enough to fit in your kayak, the STRIKER Cast might be the perfect option.

Display and Interface

Let’s start with the lack of a display. Bluetooth is used to connect this item to your smartphone or tablet. The display is therefore comparable to the quality of your phone or tablet. The display is pretty awful if you have an ancient Android with a damaged screen, as the reviewer of this article. On the other hand, it will be one of the greatest fish finder screens you’ve ever used if you have a brand-new iPhone or Google Pixel!

Again, the interface is depending on the one on your phone. Every single phone in existence has a touchscreen. This is a problem because you can find it challenging to use the Garmin STRIKER Cast app if your screen gets wet. Fortunately, there aren’t many windows to browse through and the software is rather straightforward.

There are several display adjustments available in the program. If it helps you recognize fish, you can change arches into fish symbols. To lessen noise or boost returns, you can change the gain or brightness. Additionally, you can choose between a chart view and a flasher view, which is a wonderful alternative for traditional fishermen or people used to ice fish finders.

Mapping

The Garmin STRIKER Cast review goes above and beyond in terms of mapping. Compared to units that cost twice as much, this one has better mapping. The inability to create roads and tracks is the only major drawback. Although waypoints are still available, we expect that the upcoming edition of Garmin will also provide tracks.

However, Quickdraw can be used to make precise 1-foot contour maps that can be downloaded and shared. One of the greatest contour mapping programs on the earth is Quickdraw. At its heart, the STRIKER Cast is a transducer/GPS combination with hardly any more features. This makes the gadget the best there is for contour mapping.

This tool is excellent for scouting a body of water before a competition. An excellent approach to give back to the community is to provide contour maps. You undoubtedly already know how much we enjoy charting out bodies of water if you’ve read any of our prior evaluations. The most economical method to achieve it may very well be the STRIKER Cast.

Sonar

There isn’t much to say about the sonar on this device. The two options are a frequency at 260 kHz with a 22° x 63° cone and a frequency at 455 kHz with a 9° x 14° cone.

If you don’t already know, higher frequencies often provide pictures with better target separation and higher resolution, but with less coverage. Conversely, lower frequencies offer more coverage but less accurate pictures.

The sonar in this area is completely uninteresting and has very few capabilities when compared to other current transducers. You can only see down to a depth of 150 feet, although newer transducers can reach depths of more than 300 feet. Although many fishermen rarely fish in water columns that are deeper than 150 feet, this restricted range won’t matter to them.

Networking

You guessed it: everything about networking depends on your phone. The device itself can establish a Bluetooth connection with your phone, however, to pair with the STRIKER Cast, your phone MUST support Bluetooth.

The program must be downloaded over the Internet, however, even if your phone isn’t linked to the Internet, you may still use it. When you’re online, you may download and upload the aforementioned contour maps.

Conclusion:

This device is pretty cool! We adore how simple, portable, and, most importantly, affordable it is to use.

Is it a top-tier fish finder now? Without a doubt. It’s also challenging to review. What is the speed? according to your phone. Brightness? according to your phone.

In actuality, your phone greatly influences how this gadget functions. Let’s just say the STRIKER Cast’s waterproofing won’t help you much if you drop your phone in the water.

Having said all of that, we think the STRIKER Cast is fantastic for what it is. It’s well-designed, has many more mapping functions than we’d anticipate for the price, and is an excellent method to discover fish without spending a fortune.
